Fresh off two days at Meet Magento NY 2015, we thought we’d share our top 5 takeaways. There were tons of great presentations with great content, but here are the items that really stood out.

  1. Magento 2 and B2B: Mark Brinton, Senior Technical Project Manager from Magento, confirmed Magento 2 is still slated for Q4 ’15, and noted there will be B2B features coming with it. These features will reduce the custom development required when using Magento for B2B projects. Examples of B2B specific features that would be nice to see include payment on account or via wire transfer, negotiable prices, and ordering on the SKU level.

  2. Inspiration: Kurt Theobald, CEO of Nucleus Commerce and Classy Lama, urged the Magento community to “grow the ecommerce pie” through innovation, rather than slice the pie through competition. He mentioned the Law of Compounding Innovation, suggesting that a focus on innovation leads to more innovation. We’re not sure if this is Kurt’s brain child or not, but we’re buying it. mediaspa is actually 2 weeks into our first Innovation Olympics!

  3. Shipping: Karen Baker, founder of ShipperHQ, talked about ways for merchants to appeal to customers’ increased appetite for free shipping, without bankrupting themselves. Specifically, she mentioned offering free shipping, but only doing so on slower delivery options (i.e. for ground but not overnight) or only on certain products (i.e. for clothing but not kayaks). Karen also spoke about the growth in the UPS Axis Point Network, which allows you to drop off and collect packages at convenient locations that likely have better hours than home delivery (e.g. grocery store, UPS store etc.).

  4. Email Marketing: There were several email service providers (ESPs) at the conference, and frankly, it’s not always that easy to tell how they differentiate themselves. There was some love given to MageMail as an easy and effective email vendor, and Jonny Dixon from dotmailer gave a thoughtful talk on multichannel marketing. His message – success in multichannel marketing is defined by the ability to deliver customers (1) an easy experience, that (2) shows the brand recognizes them, and (3) that the brand can anticipate their needs. We thought this was spot on. He also stated that segmented campaigns triple ROI over “batch and blast.”

  5. Magento Enterprise: When a panel of Magento Certified Solution Specialists were asked what Magento Enterprise feature were most important when considering EE versus CE. The 3 answers were: (1) Indexing for performance, (2) assurance that many of the plugins used in a CE build will work together as out-of-the box features in EE, and (3) Legal indemnification from Magento.

Bonus Stats: No one wants a top 6 list of anything, so the great stats from Antony McGregor Dey of Emarsys get their own section! Antony gave a great presentation, but it was the end of the second day, so most people missed it. Some chestnuts from his chat.

  • 92% of customers never convert, and 70% of the ones that do, don’t re-purchase

  • 63% of abandoned online purchases are recoverable

  • It’s 70% more expensive to sell to new customers

  • 1% increase in retention can equal 10% growth in revenue

  • Send cart abandonment ASAP, within an hour, then within 48 hours, as impact drops off dramatically after that time frame.

It was a great two days connecting with the Magento community!
